My name is Marcie Lipsitt and I live in Michigan with my husband, son and three dogs. I am a parent advocate, education activist and founder and co-chair of the Michigan Alliance for Special Education, a grassroots advocacy organization that has held a rally on the steps of our Michigan Capitol and was instrumental in forcing the state to raise the standards required for secondary special education teachers.

I am passionate that our children’s greatest civil right, is their right to a meaningful public education. An education that sends them on to post-secondary education, the global workforce or any path that leads to maximally productive adulthood and optimal quality of life. The lack of educational opportunities for our youth with disabilities are egregious and one of the greatest civil rights violations of the 21st century.

It is long overdue that we as a nation make public education for every American child the hallmark of our domestic policy. I am also a state and national advocate for mental health parity and have a nineteen-year-old son with special needs. Andrew is the center of my world and my hero. He wakes up each and every day with a mountain to climb.

I am also a proud member and actively participate on the Pediatric Psychopharmacology Advisory Council at the Massachusetts General Hospital. I hope to bring my almost twenty years of growing knowledge and passion about special education and learning disabilities to all who visit  my blog.
